Tow Worms were common items carried in shooting pouches of the 18th century. Attached to the wiping rod they were used to clean the bore of fouling after the gun was fired by wrapping flax fibers (tow) around the cork screw tip. Ball Screws are used to retrieve bullets, shot wads, lost patches, and other objects from the bore of a musket or rifle.
The pair pictured here were made for Bill (Three Paws) Odom and are for a .50 caliber rifle. This pair is identical to a set that I sent to Paramount Studios for use by Mel Gibson in his role in the "Patriot".
